M.I./HBDI/VARK Assessment and Occupational Desires

After reviewing my results of the multiple intelligences assessment, I found that the results I received were for the most part fairly accurate. I scored highest in the linguistic, logic, and personal intelligence areas of the test; while my lowest scores were in the naturalistic and musical categories of the assessment. I believe that this solidly depicts the areas in which I am most intelligent and the categories in which I am not. Words, numbers, and people have always been the departments that I am most familiar with. I have always prided myself in working well with others and achieving the best grades possible in my science, mathematics, and English courses. However, when it comes to music and nature related topics my confidence is not nearly as high. I like to listen to music, hunt, and be outdoors, but nonetheless, my knowledge is limited. Nevertheless, the areas of intelligence in which I do thrive have always been, in my mind, the most important when it came to creating a foundation for attaining knowledge. I think that in life, with these classifications of intelligence and a solid perception of the way people function an individual can achieve almost anything.

I believe that the HBDI (Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument) self-assessment was for the most part fairly accurate. I scored higher in the thinking and doing portions of the assessment, and I believe this is true to my learning nature because when answering and solving problems I like to know the exact facts of any given situation or argument. I tend to rather base my conclusions off of cold hard facts opposed to raw emotions or feelings. Most of the time I gravitate towards those who can present an argument in a way in which it can be proven by statistics, or how history has shown the argument in question to be true or false.

Once receiving my results for the next self- assessment we took in class, the VARK Questionnaire, I have to say that I had mixed feelings after having the opportunity to review over my scores. The category of the questionnaire in which I scored the highest was in the reading and writing section. This is true of the way I learn because usually when it comes to receiving and understanding new information I like to process it on a reading and writing basis. I look at the information given and in a way regurgitate it in a written form, at this point I tend to review over my notes by either reading or writing them over again. However, after coming to the conclusion that this portion of the assessment was true of my nature, I came to a crossroad after I saw what I had scored on the kinesthetic portion of self-assessment. I’m usually the type of individual that likes to process new information in a hands on setting or format, so I was surprised to see that I only scored a four in this category, but with this I have come to the conclusion that the questionnaire is in fact an assessment or a suggestion to the way you process information, more so than a definitive answer.

The results of my HBDI assessment compared to the VARK Questionnaire taken in class were in my opinion pretty similar. I believe that the two self-assessments compared essentially the same things but in a different way. The HBDI, in my opinion, showed more so the way you think compare to the VARK which assessed the way an individual processes new materials and information. I did however notice a difference in the score I received in the doing category of the HBDI and the score I received on the kinesthetic portion of the VARK. I believe that these two categories correlate with each other so I found it a bit odd to see that I received I high score on the doing section and a low score in the kinesthetic category, so I would have to agree more with the HBDI because I do feel that I am in fact a hands on learner. Nonetheless, I feel that these two self-assessments were for the most part pretty accurate in determining my learning process.

The field of dentistry is the occupation that I am looking to gain employment after all my schooling is said and done. Dentistry is an occupation that resides inside of the medical field, and along with it an individual must have strong analytical, linguistic, and interpersonal skills. Any person that is considering becoming a dentist must have the ability to analyze patients, and also be able to both find and implement solutions to their problems. They must have the capacity to be patient and show effective communication and intellectual skills. As I refer back to the results I received on the M.I. assessment, I believe that I would be well suited for this occupational field. According to my scores I possess strong logic, linguistic, and interpersonal skills; all of which are required to become a successful dentist. I think that if I continue to be diligent in my studies and hone in on all these skills I will one day be able to achieve success and fulfill my dream.
